One circumstance that you’re likely to experience at one point in your life is a power outage, and we have some tips on how you can prepare your home for that day.
An Emergency Preparedness Kit is a great start at easing your worries and ensuring you’re ready for any circumstance. Stock a large tub in an easily accessible area of your home and pack it with flashlights, a basic first-aid kit, hand sanitizer, baby wipes, and dry shampoo, a tool kit, battery-operated fans, cash, garbage bags, a hand-crank or battery-powered radio and an NOAA Weather Radio. You’ll also want to include a car charger for charging cell phones and extra batteries of all sizes.
Stockpiling water and nonperishable food is also essential to being prepared for disasters. It’s recommended that everyone has enough water to get them through 3 days in case something happens unexpectedly. If you’re wondering what that looks like, it equates to about one gallon of water per person per day.
When it comes to nonperishable food, you’ll want to keep your pantry stocked with items that don’t need to be cooked. While that can be a little limiting, there are still a variety of foods that meet those requirements. Everything from peanut butter, packaged tuna, and canned and dried meat to crackers, cereal, granola bars, canned and dried fruit, and comfort foods such as cookies and chocolate qualify. It’s also important to include your pets when calculating the food and water needed for your emergency kit. Make sure everyone in your home is covered.
