How to Get Settled in Your New Home

There’s a lot that comes with moving in Austin, and when that last box is moved into your new home, take a few moments to celebrate and relax before tackling the next to-do list. After you’ve thanked the movers for all of their help, get to work on these tips for how to get settled in your new home.

Get utilities set up.

Before you make your move, you’ll want to have your utilities set up and ready for you. Trust us, eating pizza around flashlights and candles you bought from the grocery store isn’t very fun after a hard day of moving. Reach out to the television provider, internet provider, electrical provider, gas provider, water department, etc. to make sure all services can be turned on before you move in or right after. You’ll also want to ask your REALTOR® about the Municipal Utility District (MUD) or Planned Unit Development (PUD).

Check boxes, furniture, and appliances.

When you make a move, there’s a possibility that damages will occur. You’ll first want to check the big-ticket items like your furniture and appliances, but you’ll also want to make sure that none of your boxes were lost. If there’s anything that was damaged or lost, reach out to the movers and your insurance company to file a claim. The quicker you’re able to do this, the more likely you are to be reimbursed for the items.

Get your family registered in schools.

Check that mail is being forwarded to your new address.

You’ll want to double-check with the post office that your mail is being forwarded to your new address and that you’ve registered your new address. This is also a great time to contact all services, agencies, friends, and family about your new address.

Find new medical professionals/set up an emergency contact list.

Getting a new doctor, dentist, vet, and any other medical specialist set up is crucial. You’ll want them to have your files, contact information, and insurance information in order to limit the forms you have to fill out when you go for an appointment. You’ll also want to create a list of local emergency contacts should anything happen, including the fire department, non-emergency police line, hospital, etc.
