2020 has created a lot of change and innovation in a variety of markets, including in real estate. While some of this year’s changes could be fads, there are some that we predict will be sticking around for a while. Here are the 2020 home trends that are here to stay.

The suburbs and countryside will be a hot market.

People nationwide are trading in their homes in urban areas for bigger homes in the suburbs or in smaller towns. Many are looking for space from their neighbors, outdoor retreats they can spend time in, and extra square footage. Housing inventories in the suburbs are dwindling faster than in urban areas across the country.

Workspaces and virtual classroom areas will be a necessity.

Buyers are looking for flexible spaces that are quiet and away from high-traffic areas that can be used as an office/virtual classroom. With many working from home and students using online learning tools, it will be crucial to have areas of the home that can be functional workspaces.

A backyard you can spend time in.

Large backyards have become something that many buyers are moving from their “want” list to their “need” list. In a year that has kept people bound to their homes, they’re looking for an outdoor retreat that allows them to enjoy some fresh air. With recommendations to host holiday functions outdoors, outdoor kitchens and large yards to space out tables will continue to be something that buyers ask for. In fact, some people may be willing to compromise on square footage for a larger yard.

Open floor plans with tons of natural light are in.

Home design trends fluctuate year after year, but one that we don’t see changing is the need for open floor plans with a lot of natural light and clear sightlines into the main rooms of the home. As families spend more time inside, it’s necessary to be able to carry on conversations or see what your family is doing from the other main parts of the home. The natural light helps bring the outdoors inside and can keep energy levels and moods boosted, while the open floor plan is very functional.
