What exactly does outdoor living mean?  Outdoor living is extending your lifestyle into your yard. It is actively using your outdoor space as a place to cook, eat, socialize, relax and maybe even get some work done.  A survey conducted by Houzz.com showed that people want their backyards to be “relaxing extensions of their interior living spaces.”  The three most common uses for outdoor living spaces are gathering with friends and family, chillaxing, and offering a safe space for children to play.

Extension of the Interior

Homeowners have shown more appreciation for their yards within the last few years. Many homeowners are investing in their outdoor spaces as an extension of the home.  With fire pits and patio heaters, outdoor living rooms can be a prime spot for entertainment and leisure regardless of the season.  Besides refocusing the yard space for entertaining or hobbies, a yard has also become an excellent place to work from home.  Many homeowners have admitted that they perform their job-related functions better when they’re in the comfort of their backyards.

Good Investment

Most homebuyers put a spacious yard at the top of their wish list when searching for a new home. New homeowners are more willing to hire professionals and invest money into yard improvements. Most homeowners who responded to the Houzz.com survey said they plan to invest more into their yards in 2022. The most popular enhancements are simply adding more plants or flowers and buying more comfortable outdoor furniture in the quest to create that perfect oasis.

Quality of Life

Spending time outdoors has been shown to improve both physical and mental health. People who spend more time outdoors are more likely to be happier throughout their lives.  A cozy outdoor space blurs the separation between inside and out, and spending more time outside helps us feel sheltered in nature.  The art of the “staycation” has been renamed “backyarding” as folks begin to create more enjoyable outdoor areas.  Having a nice space outside is just a better way to live for some, and now there’s no turning back!
