The Boomers of Smart Home Technology-Prism Realty-Austin Real Estate-Cedar Park Homes-Leander Homes-Georgetown Real Estate

The demographic profile of the United States will undergo significant changes in the next few decades. The year 2030 will be a major turning point as all baby boomers will be older than 65 by then. As people grow older, their sensory, cognitive, and physical abilities decrease, which increases the need for homes with more accessible features. Research shows that smart-home technologies make daily tasks easier for older adults and improve their overall quality of life. The top three benefits of smart-home features for older adults are: enhancing safety, reducing energy bills, and making daily life more convenient.

According to a study by the MIT AgeLab and The Hartford, 51% of homeowners aged 50 and older are interested in smart-home technology or already have it. Of those interested in smart-home features, about 49% are willing to spend between $101 and $500 on it in a given year.

Smart-home technology was initially focused on increasing energy savings and security. However, the scope of its benefits has shifted over the years towards assisting elderly and disabled people. The study concluded that the top-ten innovative technologies useful for older adults are:

  1. Automatic lighting
  2. Doorbell cameras
  3. Home security systems
  4. Keyless entry
  5. Thermostats
  6. Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors
  7. Mold and/or water monitoring sensors
  8. Outlets/plugs
  9. Water shutoff valves
  10. Window blinds

Most adults would prefer to stay in their own homes and “age in place” as they get older. The number of older adults living in their own homes alone or with their spouses will rise significantly over the next few decades. Technologies such as those mentioned above, along with smart fall detection systems and smart beds, can make aging in place a more viable option.

There is no denying that technology has changed how we live our lives. It has made our homes more comfortable and convenient. Smart-home technologies will play a significant role in enabling Baby Boomers to stay safe, have a better quality of life, and enjoy the comfort of living in their own homes for as long as they are able.
